Following a string of successful debuts with the world’s leading opera houses, Sonya Yoncheva has quickly established herself as one of her generation’s most promising and exciting performers. The soprano’s wide-ranging repertoire includes baroque works as well as Mozart, Verdi, and Puccini, and she has rapidly become a permanent fixture on some of the world’s most important opera stages, including New York’s Metropolitan Opera, London’s Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Berlin and Vienna Staatsoper, and the Opéra national de Paris. Celebrated for her singularly beautiful voice and powerful dramatic style, Yoncheva is equally at home on the concert and recital stage.
Born in 1981 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Yoncheva studied piano and voice in her hometown in the class of Nelly Koitcheva, and obtained her master’s degree in classical singing at the Conservatory of Geneva. In 2010, she won Plácido Domingo’s famous Operalia competition, where she was also awarded the CulturArte Prize. She received the Special Prize of Les Amis du Festival at the Academy of Aix en Provence Festival in 2007, and was awarded prestigious scholarships by both the Colette Mosetti and Kiefer Hablitzel Foundations in Switzerland. In 2015 Yoncheva won her first ECHO Klassik Award as “Newcomer of the Year (vocal).” She has collaborated with popular artists such as Sting and Elvis Costello and the famed composer Vladimir Cosma.
Yoncheva’s debut recording Paris, mon amour was released in February 2015. She records exclusively for the Sony Classical label, and is a Rolex Ambassador.
