About the 2019 Tabernacle Christmas Concert
“You'll find that this concert program is very, very different from previous years,” remarked Mack Wilberg, music director of the Choir, “I think that that's one of the keys to us to being successful from year to year.”
These recordings are from the unique 2019 Christmas concert which began without the choir. The stage was softly lit with Christmas trees and a family farmhouse setting. Musicians of the Orchestra at Temple at Temple Square were in place, but the choir loft was empty. At Mack Wilberg’s direction, the Orchestra’s sound filled the Conference Center with the American folk carol “Star in the East.” Soon, 360 members of The Tabernacle Choir began singing and walking from the back of the Conference Center to the stage in a rhythmical processional to take their places in the loft. Each one carried a candle in their hands, filling the stage with light.
But that was only the beginning! As the program continued, the combined talents of guests Kelli O’Hara and Richard Thomas, the Tabernacle Choir, Orchestra, and Bells kept the audience enthralled. From Broadway songs highlighting O’Hara’s Tony®-Award winning performances to Handel’s “Hallelujah” to the amazing organ number with blue-grass band Cold Creek. the audience was engaged. Joined at various points in the program by the Gabriel Trumpet Ensemble, the total Christmas music experience delivered on the high expectations for this annual event.
