Choir Begins 86th Year of Broadcasting — A Record!

It is an enviable record! Four thousand, four hundred twenty-six (4,426) completed broadcasts. Count them.

Since July 15, 1929 the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has been singing its way into the hearts of listeners in a weekly program. Its beginning was makeshift at best. A single microphone dangling over the Choir and a technician positioned on the basement stairs to cue the radio operator who then signaled the audio engineer who cued NBC headquarters in New York by telegraph. Thirty stations received that first program. Today, with its state-of-the art broadcast studio, Music & the Spoken Word is carried on television, satellite, cable and the Internet including the Choir’s own website and social media channels such as YouTube and Facebook.

It’s easy to see why the Choir stands shoulder-to-shoulder with broadcast greats Bob Hope and Paul Harvey in the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and the National Radio Hall of Fame.
