Two Upcoming Events Just For Organ Lovers
Fans of the organ and Temple Square visitors will be interested in two upcoming events. Details below:
Organist Alexander Schreiner Lecture - August 14th at 7 pm
Alexander Schreiner and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir were inseparable for half a century. One of the most celebrated organists of the twentieth century, he was listed by the Musical American Radio polls among the top artists in the nation seven times.
The Church History Library will host the Men and Women of Faith lecture “Alexander Schreiner: A Legacy of Music” on Thursday, August 14 at 7:00 pm in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square. Dr. Daniel F. Berghout will be the featured speaker. This event is free.
Classical 89 Organ Fest VII - August 22nd at 8 pm
Organ Fest VII on Friday, August 22 at 8:00 pm in the Cathedral of the Madeline located at 311 South Temple promises an evening of beautiful music featuring all five Tabernacle organists as well as the newly appointed organist for the Cathedral of the Madeleine. This program has become a beloved tradition in the community.
The evening will honor a recently departed colleague, organist Douglas E. Bush, a member of the BYU School of Music faculty for 35 years, who passed away in October 2013 at the age of 66. “He left a huge void in the Utah organ world,” said Richard Elliott, principal Tabernacle Organist. “The five members of the Tabernacle organ staff were closely connected to Doug in many ways, and we plan to honor his memory during Organ Fest VII.” The program will feature music that Doug Bush loved and performed—particularly the music of Bach—as well as some of Bush’s own compositions. “Each organist will also share a personal reflection on the influence that he had on them,” Elliott said.
