Bryn Terfel And Choir Plan Fall Release
Renowned Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square are releasing an album, Homeward Bound, on Deutsche Grammophon this fall. The project reunites the Choir with Terfel, who appeared at a Christmas spectacular in the Salt Lake Conference Center 10 years ago with mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade.
According to Deutsche Grammophon officials, this is the most ambitious studio album ever made in the label’s 115-year history. It is also the first time the Choir has recorded with this prestigious label. Homeward Bound required five days of recording sessions in the Choir’s home, the Tabernacle on Temple Square. The new album features songs, hymns, spirituals, popular classics, and new songs, many arranged by Choir Music Director Mack Wilberg. British Royal Wedding composer Paul Mealor wrote one of the selections, “Faith’s Call,” especially for Terfel and the Choir.
The album highlights the strong Welsh connection Terfel shares with the Choir. Many of the founding members and conductors in the mid-19th century included Welsh immigrants.
Terfel has become a familiar voice and face with Choir audiences. In 2008 he joined with the Choir to record Mack Wilberg’s Requiem.
