Choir Leadership Briefly Delays Rehearsals, Return to Live Broadcasts
The health and safety of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square organization members and its audiences is the highest priority for the leadership of the Choir. Given the community-wide surge in COVID cases and in consultation with the Choir’s adviser, Bishop Caussé and the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Choir leaders have decided to briefly delay the resumption of Choir rehearsals that was scheduled to begin on Thursday, August 26.
Instead, a private Choir organization devotional will be held on that evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Tabernacle. With the Choir’s adviser Bishop Gérald Caussé presiding, the devotional will be a celebration of the devoted service of President and Sister Jarrett and an introduction to President and Sister Leavitt and the counselors who will serve with them.
Attendance at the devotional is limited to all Choir organization members, including the Choir, Orchestra, Bells, and volunteer and professional staff. Attendance may be either in person by those who are fully vaccinated with socially-distanced seating and masks required or virtually through an online meeting link. A press release with the names and biographical information about the two counselors introduced at the devotional will be issued after the announcement is made that evening.
During the delay in the resumption of rehearsals, Choir leadership in consultation with a distinguished team of scientists, physicians, and public health experts will be completing a detailed set of policies and operating procedures. This Choir COVID Plan is designed to make rehearsing and performing as safe as reasonably possible while pandemic conditions continue. Choir leaders anticipate that online training in Choir COVID Plan procedures will be conducted in early to mid-September with the implementation of these procedures shortly thereafter to permit resumption of rehearsals for planned Choir participation in the Church’s October general conference.
The timing for the resumption of all rehearsals including those involving the Orchestra at Temple Square and Bells at Temple Square, the return to live Music & the Spoken Word broadcasts, and public attendance at these rehearsals and broadcasts will be evaluated in the weeks ahead and an announcement will be made at a later date.
The daily organ recitals held at noon and 2:00 p.m. on Temple Square which resumed in July will continue under guidelines for other Temple Square activities.
