In Honor of the 70th Anniversary of the Choir’s First Broadcast to Britain, Four Songs with Lyrics by British Writers
Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s first overseas broadcast. On January 16, 1944, the music of the Choir was broadcast from Salt Lake City to U.S. Army Special Services in Great Britain.
In commemoration of that event, here are four Mormon Tabernacle Choir songs with lyrics by British writers.
Nearer, My God, to Thee
The lyrics to “Nearer, My God, to Thee” were written by Sarah F. Adams, an English poet.
I Sing the Mighty Power of God
While the piece above is arranged by Mack Wilberg, the lyrics to the song are credited to Englishman Issac Watts.
Come, Ye Thankful People, Come
Henry Alford of London wrote the lyrics to this hymn.
Lead, Kindly Light
London-born John Henry Newman was 33 years-old when he wrote the lyrics to "Lead, Kindly Light."
