Love to Sing? Choir Audition Cycle Starts June 1!
If you—or someone you know—have expressed interest in becoming a member of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, the once-a-year online audition application period opens on June 1, 2020. All applications must be submitted by August 15, 2020.
Even though the current pandemic situation has not permitted the Choir to rehearse or perform publicly since March, the Choir is looking to the future when gathering together to make music will once again be possible.
With an eye to that time, auditions will go forward using the online application system that was launched in 2019. To give applicants more time to complete the process, the online tool will be available on June 1st—30 days earlier than in past years.
In normal circumstances, members of The Tabernacle Choir have the unique experience of expressing their faith and talents through music that has the power to help people feel closer to the divine. Their usual duties include weekly performances on the Music & the Spoken Word broadcast plus concerts, tours, and recordings. Choir members average six hours per week rehearsing for 75 scheduled performances per year.
To apply, all applicants must:
- Be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in good standing.
- Be between 25 and 55 years of age on April 30, 2021, when Choir service would begin.
- Currently reside within 100 miles of the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, Utah.
What Is New About the Choir Application Process in 2020?
The application process is beginning 30 days earlier than in past years and the Church leader endorsement is now done online. Continuing the process begun in 2019, all Choir applications are submitted entirely online. Before beginning the application, applicants must first carefully read the Application Guide posted on June 1 when the link to the application system becomes available.
Each application requires a digital voice recording and digital photo submission. Upon receipt of the electronic application, the Choir will email notification to the applicant’s local Church leader and ask for an ecclesiastical endorsement. All audition applications must be submitted by August 15, 2020.
What Is the Audition Process?
The process to become a member of the Choir stretches over nine months. An individual must meet the set of membership criteria outlined above and complete a four-phase audition process. The fourth phase of the process includes 16 weeks of training in the Choir School and Chorale at Temple Square. At the conclusion of the four phases, successful candidates become members of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.
