Luis Miranda Jr., who happens to be the father of Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, sang with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on October 26, 2017, during a Thursday night rehearsal in Salt Lake City’s historic Tabernacle.

Miranda was in town for the Utah debut of the Hamilton Education Program, known as #EduHam. According to an article published in the Deseret News, the program will “bring the hit Broadway and Tony award-winning musical Hamilton along with a special corresponding U.S. history curriculum to 2,300 high school students and teachers from Title I public schools in the Salt Lake City area for the 2017–2018 school year.” Miranda added, “The Hamilton Education Program is an opportunity to open the doors for theater for kids who otherwise may not have the opportunity to be entertained by live theater.”

Utah Lt. Governor Spencer J. Cox announced, “Today we’re going to talk about changing the lives of thousands of students here in the state of Utah.” He said, “I’m very grateful, for our inner city kids and for our rural kids, that they’ll have this unique opportunity.” Cox also sang with the Choir during rehearsal.

Miranda’s son, Lin-Manuel, wrote a song to raise funds for Puerto Rico, which was ravaged by Hurricane Maria. The song, “Almost Like Praying,” borrows lines from the song “Maria,” from West Side Story, which is about the struggle of Puerto Rican immigrants in America. All of the proceeds from the sales of the song go to the Hispanic Federation, which was founded by Luis Miranda Jr.

In addition to being the father of a famous son, Miranda has his own long list of accomplishments, including being named a special adviser for Hispanic Affairs to Mayor Edward I. Koch in the 1980s. He served as director of the Mayor’s Office for Hispanic Affairs from 1987 to 1989 and was appointed to the board of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation by Mayor Koch in 1989, served during the David Dinkins administration, and in 1993 was appointed its chairman by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. In 1990, he founded the Hispanic Federation.

Currently, Miranda is founding partner for MirRam Group and is also currently the chairperson of the Broadway League’s Latino audience development program, Viva Broadway. He is a board member of the John Jay College Foundation, vice-chair of the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance, and a member of the advisory boards to Nielsen Ratings and R.Evolucion Latina.

In this video, Miranda speaks about growing up with the influence of theater and politics and expresses his passion for the arts and languages.
