New Mahler Symphony No. 8 Album Features the Choir and Utah Symphony
On November 17, 2017, a two-disc recording featuring the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Utah Symphony, directed by Thierry Fischer, will be released. The album also features choristers of The Madeleine Choir School and soloists Orla Boylan, Celena Shafer, and Amy Owens (sopranos); Charlotte Hellekant and Tamara Mumford (mezzo-sopranos); Barry Banks (tenor); Markus Werba (baritone); and Jordan Bisch (bass). Pre-orders are available on Amazon.com. Through November 16, purchases at the Utah Symphony Guild Store are $5 off.
“It was an incredible opportunity for the Choir to join its talents with The Madeleine Choir School, gifted soloists, and of course, the world-renowned Utah Symphony,” said Ron Jarrett, president of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. “I marvel at the depth of local talent and the willingness of musicians to come together in a unique collaboration to perform this musical tour de force. It is a testament of hope and optimism that does justice to Mahler’s vision.”
Thierry Fischer, music director of the Utah Symphony acknowledged, “Not many orchestras are fortunate enough to record Mahler 8... ever. But thanks to Maurice Abravanel and the tradition he started 50 years ago, it has happened here in Utah twice!”
In addition to being released as a CD, the album will also be available as a digital download. You can purchase the recording on the Utah Symphony’s online store, Reference Recordings web site, and other online retailers, as well as the orchestra’s gift shop at Abravanel Hall.
The recorded concerts were sponsored by the O.C. Tanner Gift of Music, founded over 30 years ago by Obert C. Tanner and Gordon B. Hinckley to share performances of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Utah Symphony as a gift to the community.
