The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Visits Walt Disney World
In March 1989 the Mormon Tabernacle Choir traveled across the United States to Orlando, Florida, to perform at a magical place called Walt Disney World. The Choir’s performances were recorded by the Disney Network to use in four national television broadcasts. The broadcasts were for an Easter parade, the Children’s Miracle NetworkTelethon, a Fourth of July program, and a broadcast that was part of the Disney Christmas Parade program.
Many of Disney’s beloved characters such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Pinocchio, Winnie the Pooh, and Snow White joined the Choir for one of their performances of “When You Wish Upon a Star.”
The Choir recently revived some Disney classics for the 2014 Pioneer Day concert featuring one of the stars of Disney’s Frozen, Santino Fontana. The Choir performed a “Whistle While You Work/Heigh-ho” medley as well as “When You Wish Upon a Star,” the latter being written by Utah native Leigh Harline, who studied piano and organ with former Mormon Tabernacle Choir conductor J. Spencer Cornwall. Harline also won the Academy Award in the Best Original Song category for “When You Wish Upon a Star” in 1941. Below is the video of the Choir performing the song from the 1940 classic movie Pinocchio. The song is also included on the Choir’s 2007 album, Showtime! Music of Broadway and Hollywood.
