What’s New with The Tabernacle Choir

April 2022 Articles

Music & the Spoken Word features St. Olaf Choir

On Sunday, May 1, 2022, The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square will feature the famed St. Olaf Choir conducted by Anton Armstrong on its long-running Music & the Spoken Word program. Armstrong will conduct the St. Olaf Choir together with The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square in performing a composition Mack Wilberg previously composed especially for the St. Olaf Choir, “Light Dawns on a Weary World.” The St. Olaf Choir will perform two additional selections—one a cappella and one with piano accompaniment—both conducted by Armstrong. Mack Willberg will conduct the combined choirs and orchestra for the broadcast’s concluding number, “Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends.” The repertoire for the broadcast can be found here.

The Tabernacle Choir Creates New Managing Director Position

The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square has created a new Managing Director position to oversee the organization as part of a revised administrative structure. The new position is just the latest in a series of structural changes that started in August 2021 when President Michael O. Leavitt and his counselors, L. Whitney Clayton, and Gary B. Porter, were called to lead the Choir as a presidency—a first for the Choir. With that new organizational structure, the Choir presidency serves at the executive council level and reports to Bishop Gérald Caussé, Presiding Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Choir Music Adds Spiritual Emphasis to Conference Messages

Religious movements flourish with the aid of religious song. In fact, music has long been the handmaiden of religion. President Harold B. Lee, eleventh president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said, “The most effective preaching of the gospel is when it is accompanied by beautiful music.” So it is that The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square has sung at General Conferenced of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The twice a year gatherings, April and October, give leaders of the Church an opportunity to speak the words and will of God. The music of the Choir adds spiritual emphasis to their messages.
