The 2016 application period for membership in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir opens July 1 and closes August 15. The Choir music directors will be auditioning for all voice parts. Choir applications are available online.
The audition process is rigorous, stretching over 4 months. The first phase is submitting the application packet, which includes an application, a CD voice recording, and a bishop’s recommendation. The second phase is a musical skills assessment that measures musical ability and aptitude. Applicants with an acceptable test score then advance to the third phase, an in person audition before the music directors.
Those interested in applying must be active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and live within 100 miles of Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Applicants must be between 25 and 55 years of age on April 30, 2016, when Choir service would begin. Tenure in the Choir is 20 years or until age 60, whichever comes first.
Those who successfully complete the audition process are accepted into the Temple Square Chorale and Choir School beginning January 2017, which includes rehearsals and performances as well as participation in a 16-week choral music training school. Following a final exam and performance, they become members of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
