About

The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square

For more than a century, The Tabernacle Choir has given voice to the hopes, joys, trials, and triumphs of people around the world.

A 360-voice volunteer chorus

The Tabernacle Choir is a 360-member chorus of men and women, all volunteers. They have performed at World’s Fairs and expositions, at the inaugurations of United States presidents, in acclaimed concert halls across Australia, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, and today on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, and Apple Music.

The result of their high standard of choral music has earned the Choir an enduring nickname: “America’s Choir.”

From 1847 to today

When Latter-day Saints moved to the Salt Lake Valley in the American West under the direction of Church President Brigham Young, a small choir was formed. It first sang at a conference of the Church on August 22, 1847 — just twenty-nine days after the first pioneers arrived.

Known from its beginnings as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the organization changed its name in October 2018 to more closely align with its sponsoring organization, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Choir is now called The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.

Music & the Spoken Word — on the air since 1929

In 1929, the Choir began broadcasting Music & the Spoken Word on radio. The program — carried on more than 2,000 radio and television stations and with over 4,500 episodes produced — is the world’s longest continuously running network broadcast.

New episodes air every Sunday morning from the Tabernacle on Temple Square or the Conference Center across the street.

Service through song

With their voices and their shared faith in God, members of the Choir are a significant presence in the world of music. The Tabernacle Choir is dedicated to the universal language of music — its power to bring joy, peace, and healing to its listeners — and to giving service through song.

This organization transcends cultural and generational boundaries, bringing together people from around the world through stirring music.
