About

Choir History

Often called "America’s Choir," the 360-member volunteer Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square has performed for presidents, world’s fairs, and audiences across the globe.

A Choir Heard Around the World

The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square is a 360-member volunteer chorus that has performed at world’s fairs, presidential inaugurations, and in concert halls across the globe. Recordings and broadcasts reach audiences on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, and Apple Music.

Often called "America’s Choir," the ensemble has spent more than a century building a reputation for sacred and inspirational music sung at the highest standard.

Origins

The Choir was organized in 1847 — just 29 days after the first group of pioneers under Brigham Young arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. It has sung continuously ever since.

In 2018, after more than a century as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the ensemble was renamed The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square to reflect its broad mission and the diversity of its audience.

Broadcasting Legacy

In 1929, the Choir launched a weekly radio broadcast titled "Music & the Spoken Word." Now in its tenth decade on the air, it is the world’s longest continuing network broadcast — more than 4,500 episodes carried on over 2,000 stations.

A Shared Mission

The Choir is dedicated to the universal, healing power of music. It serves alongside a family of affiliated ensembles — the Orchestra at Temple Square, the Organists at Temple Square, the Bells at Temple Square, and the Chorale at Temple Square — all volunteer organizations united in the same mission.
