Bells at Temple Square
A 32-member volunteer handbell ensemble, formed in 2005, that performs semi-annual concerts in the Tabernacle and enhances Choir recordings.
A New Voice in a Long Tradition
Music has been part of life at Temple Square since 1847. In 2005, a new voice joined that tradition: the Bells at Temple Square.
The ensemble was made possible by an anonymous donation that funded a full set of 7-octave handbells, 6½-octave handbells, and two 6-octave handchimes — instruments rare enough that fewer than a handful of ensembles in the world play with comparable scope.
In February of 2005, auditions selected 28 charter members from a pool of volunteer musicians. The ensemble has since grown to a current roster of 32 musicians. They perform semi-annual concerts in the Tabernacle and contribute to The Tabernacle Choir’s recordings.
Geoff Anderson serves as the ensemble’s conductor.
