Joseph Peeples was appointed as a Temple Square organist in 2019, continuing a tradition that dates back to Utah’s early pioneer era. In this role, he participates in the daily recital series on the renowned 206-rank Æolian-Skinner Tabernacle organ; performs with The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square on its weekly radio and television broadcast, Music & the Spoken Word ;

serves on the faculty of the Choir’s training school; and accompanies the Temple Square Chorale, the Bells at Temple Square, guest choirs at the semiannual general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and other visiting choirs performing on Temple Square. He also teaches at the annual Brigham Young University Organ Workshop.

Before his appointment on Temple Square, he served as Organist at First United Methodist Church in Santa Barbara and as University Organist at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, California—his home-town. He has played for Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, and Disciples of Christ congregations. He has also taught courses in music theory, appreciation, and performance at California Lutheran, Pepperdine, Indiana, and Brigham Young Universities.

He is a doctoral candidate in organ performance at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he studied with Janette Fishell, Chris Young, and Bruce Neswick. He earned his Master of Music in organ performance from Brigham Young University, where he studied with Don Cook and Doug Bush.

Away from the organ, he takes on a different kind of challenge as a scientific programmer in optical thin-film research. Together, these two pursuits help him appreciate God as both Artist and Scientist. He is the proud father of three sons.

This series showcases renowned organists from around the globe playing one of the world’s most famous and iconic pipe organs.

The Tabernacle Organ Virtuoso Performance Series is free to the public, and no tickets are required.
