2017—It’s Been a Great Year!
With the Sunday, December 31 New Year’s Eve broadcast of Music & the Spoken Word, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir will finish a busy, productive year.
The Choir accepted invitations to perform in January 2017 at both the Utah Governor’s inauguration ceremony as well as the United States presidential inauguration ceremony in Washington, D.C.
For RootsTech 2017, a global family history conference held February 2017, the Choir and Orchestra presented “Music—It Runs in the Family,” showcasing the music of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II with narration by Oscar “Andy” Hammerstein III and guest soloist Dallyn Vail Bayles.
In March the Choir and Orchestra presented an Easter concert featuring Beethoven’s Christ on the Mount of Olives and premiered Mack Wilberg’s new composition of A Cloud of Witnesses.
In May 2017, the Choir released a new CD, Mormon Tabernacle Choir & Friends, which reached Billboard’s #1 spot. In October O Come, Little Children CDs and DVDs (recorded during the 2016 Christmas concerts) were released, along with The Little Match Girl book.
As part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Salt Lake Tabernacle and Tabernacle organ, the Choir and Tabernacle organists performed a special concert for the American Guild of Organists on June 13. The celebrations continued in September 2017 with a special Music & the Spoken Word broadcast presented to commemorate the Tabernacle anniversary and the organ’s first use.
July marked the start of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s 89th broadcast year of Music & the Spoken Word—the longest continuing weekly broadcast in the world—a history that continues to be made each week! Watch for the start of the 90th year next July!
Alex Boyé was the Choir’s featured guest for the Choir’s annual Pioneer Day concerts held in conjunction with the community-wide celebration of pioneers. If you couldn’t join in person or watch the live stream, don’t miss the video of this concert. Alex Boyé is an audience favorite.
This Christmas the Choir, Orchestra, and Bells were honored to feature Broadway and television star Sutton Foster and British television, stage, and film actor Hugh Bonneville in their annual Christmas concerts. Just like past Christmas concerts, this year’s concerts were full of surprises and new elements for the audiences. Recordings of this concert will be released in the fall of 2018 and will be broadcast during the holiday season on PBS and BYUtv stations.
