Two People Who Lived Nearly 200 Years Apart Gave Us the Lyrics to “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”
Two people who lived nearly 200 years apart are responsible for the lyrics to “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty.” Joachim Neander, born in 1650 in Germany, wrote the original lyrics in German, and Catherine Winkworth, born in 1827 in England, translated the words into English.
In addition to translating “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,” Winkworth is credited with translating hundreds of other German hymns. She also published chorale books as well as histories of German musicians and hymn writers. In 1870, she was was made secretary of the Committee to Promote the Higher Education of Women.
